Development studio ArenaNet has laid off 143 of its 400 employees this week. The layoffs are part of NCSoft's corporate restructuring.
According to a recent announcement, the studio is still committed to supporting Guild Wars 2 and its online services. The game's upcoming Living World season 5 is also said to still be on track for release.
143 out of the studio's 400 employees are rumored to have been laid off, although the studio was unable to confirm that number at the time of writing. The layoffs hit several studio veterans, including Gaile Gray, Matthew Medina and Josh Foreman.
The layoffs are part of NCSoft's corporate restructuring after it had canceled two unannounced ArenaNet projects, one of which is rumored to be a mobile game for which the studio hired last year. ArenaNet is still an NCSoft subsidiary and is not fully independent.
Last November, NCSoft had also shut down MMORPG WildStar and its development studio Carbine Studios due to disappointing sales figures. It is unlikely that Guild Wars 2 and its development studio will meet the same fate considering the game still makes a significant amount of revenue.
