Development studio ArenaNet has announced it is working on a third expansion pack for its 2012 MMORPG game Guild Wars 2. The expansion pack is in early development.
According to a recent announcement, the third expansion pack is now in development. Details regarding story, features and release dates have yet to be announced.
The studio has released a single piece of artwork for this third expansion. This artwork features exotic-looking buildings and landscapes, indicating that this expansion may take players to Cantha, the location of Guild Wars Factions from 2006.
Long-term fans of the franchise have requested a return to Cantha ever since the game released in 2012. To the dismay of many fans, the Cantha district in the human capital Divinity's Reach was removed shortly before the launch, making a return rather unlikely.
A reason for the removal of the district was never given, fueling rumours and speculations. Out of these, the most prominent explanation was that the content was cut because the exotic theme did not sit well with the game's South Korean publisher NCSoft. The publisher never released an official statement.
Whether a return to Cantha will actually happen still remains to be seen. The development studio notes that "it is much too soon to talk about any details". However, it also mentioned that the artwork released this week will give fans reason to "dream along with us about where we’re headed."
