Guild Wars 2 gets Call to Glory competitive update

Development studio ArenaNet has released a new competitive update for its 2012 MMORPG game Guild Wars 2. The Call to Glory update features changes to all competitive game modes.

The update brings the long-awaited Swiss tournaments for the game's Player versus Player mode. The system is fully automated to ensure the number of rounds played its determined by the number of participating teams. The tournament style is favored in various e-sports titles, including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Overwatch and Hearthstone.

Alongside the release of Swiss tournaments is the introduction of mini seasons. These run between regular PvP League seasons to allow players to earn rewards, titles and glory.

The expected alliances system for World versus World is still not included in this update, however. The system was announced in 2018, but development studio ArenaNet has stayed quiet on its progress. The last progress update on the major World Restructuring update was given in November 2018. Whether it is still in active development is unknown.

Despite alliances not being available any time soon, the update does bring new content for World versus World players to play for, such as a new Guildrider Warclaw Skin Reward Track, which gives a Warclaw skin featuring your guild's emblem, and a new Warlords armorset, which can also be unlocked through the Player versus Player game mode.

Last but not least, the update brings a long list of skill balance changes. Skill balance has been problematic for competitive game modes since the game launched in 2012 because the game originally shipped with a system that shared many skills over all three modes. The team now notes it "will be doing more separation and targeted adjustments on a per-mode basis."

To entice players to check out the update, the game runs a Bonus Rewards Event for a limited time. The event provides +15% PvP Rank Points, +25% Reward Track Progress, and +200% Magic Find in Player versus Player and +25% Reward Track Progress, +50% Magic Find, and +100% WvW Experience Gain in World versus World. The exact event dates can be found on our calendar.

The Guild Wars 2 Call to Glory update released on February 25, 2020.
