HTC has officially announced the new edition of its virtual reality headset: the HTC Vive Pro. The company has also confirmed it will be releasing a wireless adapter.

The new announcement confirms yesterday's rumors. The new HTC Vive Pro virtual reality headset will feature two OLED displays that are capable of displaying 2880 x 1600 pixels images spread over both eyes.

This means that both sides of the headset will feature a 1440 x 1600 pixels panel at 615 ppi. The higher resolutions are expected to reduce the screendoor effect.

With the new OLED displays the HTC Vive Pro will be on par with HTC's standalone Vive Focus headset that was revealed last year. The original HTC Vive headset features a display that is capable of displaying just 2160 x 1200 pixel images.

The HTC Vive Pro also incorporates speakers similarly to the way they are implemented in headsets from competitor Oculus Rift. It also features two microphones with noise cancellation and two front-facing camera's that may be used for augmented and mixed reality experiences.

In addition to the new headset, HTC has also announced a new wireless adapter that will support both the HTC Vive and HTC Vive Pro headsets.

The wireless adapter uses Intel's WiGig technology and is expected to perform similarly to TPCast's solution that we saw last year.

The HTC Vive Pro is expected to go on sale later this year. A retail price has not yet been announced. The original HTC Vive will continue to be available for purchase after its launch.
