Development studio Psyonix has announced it will be ditching loot boxes in Rocket league to replace them with microtransactions. The studio was acquired by Epic Games earlier this year.

All paid randomized loot boxes will be removed from Rocket League later this year, development studio Psyonix announced. The system will be replaced with microtransactions to allow players to see the exact items they are buying in advance.

Rocket Pass, downloadable content packs and the Esports shop will continue to be available once the change goes live, but loot boxes will no longer be purchasable sometime later this year.

Random loot boxes in games have been under increased scrutiny in recent months as some countries consider the practice to violate gambling laws. Loot boxes in Rocket League were already banned in the Netherlands and Belgium earlier this year.

Rocket League developer Psyonix was acquired by Epic Games earlier this year. The decision to remove loot boxes is in line with previous Epic Games decisions. The company also removed loot boxes from its battle royale game Fortnite.
