Development studio Rockstar Games has officially announced it is working on the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. The game does not yet have an official title, but its likely to be named Grand Theft Auto 6.

According to a recent tweet, development of the next entry in the series is "underway". The studio notes that its goal is to significantly move beyond what has already been delivered.

The tweet is likely a response to fans of the series questioning the continuous release cycle of Grand Theft Auto V. The latest entry in the series released almost 10 years ago in 2013, but has been re-released several times for different consoles.

The announcement of the next game in the series via a tweet is surprising because the studio has historically favoured marketing campaigns for the announcement of new entries in the series.

The release of the next Grand Theft Auto game is likely still several years away. Development studio Rockstar Games notes that it will be sharing more "as soon as [they] are ready".

Grand Theft Auto 6 does not yet have a release date.
