Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has stated that the publisher wants microtransactions in all its future titles, likely including Red Dead Redemption 2.
The publisher wants microtransactions in its titles because it saw tremendous growth after it released Grand Theft Auto V back in 2013.
The game features a dedicated multiplayer mode called Grand Theft Auto Online where players can acquire virtual items by purchasing so-called Shark Cards with real currency.
Zelnick made the statement in the publisher's shareholder earnings conference call.
According to Zelnick, microtransactions don't always have to be linked to an online model and thus may even appear in some of the publisher's singleplayer games.
The publisher expects that players will keep engaging with its products if it is able to continuously "delight" the player, such as by releasing new content updates. According to Zelnick, the publisher sees an opportunity "to monetize that engagement".
Take-Two Interactive has yet to announce microtransactions for Red Dead Redemption 2, but it likely will as the game's release date draws closer. The publisher has already acquired a domain name for the game's upcoming multiplayer mode Red Dead Online.
