World of Warcraft legacy server Nostalrius to return after legal issues
Tuesday, November 8, 2016 - 14:00 GMT

The legacy World of Warcraft server Nostalrius that got shut down by Blizzard earlier this year is planning on making a comeback after Blizzard ceased to communicate on a way to resolve the player's demand for a vanilla server.

The vanilla private server project was shut down back in April when Blizzard Entertainment sent a cease-and-desist letter to the team that is maintaining the project.

Since then the development team of the vanilla server project has been in contact with Blizzard to find a way to bring back the legacy World of Warcraft experience as it was prior to the game's first expansion The Burning Crusade that was released back in 2007.

According to a forum post on the project's official forum, people were expecting Blizzard to announce the official and legal return of the server at BlizzCon last Friday, but the announcement was never made.

"BlizzCon is the golden occasion for them to announce their plan for legacy realms, and potentially fulfil the dreams of millions of fans over the world." the forum post stated.

Because of the lack of any recognition from Blizzard the development team behind Nostalrius has now stated that they will hand over the project's source code to a group of like-minded individuals which they "believe to be the most in line with [their] core values".

According to the recent announcement the project's source code will be first given to an existing Legacy project named Elysium. Once this work has been completed the source code and documentation will be release to the public free of charge.

The announcement further states that the "Nostalrius server backbone can be considered as one of the rare production servers of that scale to become available.". The purpose of the release of the source code will "still remain mainly educational in nature."

Blizzard Entertainment has not yet commented on the imminent release of the source code.
