Microsoft has confirmed that it will cease the production of its Kinect peripheral. The Kinect was a motion sensing camera built for the Xbox 360. It was also released for the Xbox One and PC.
The Kinect sensor used many infrared dots to map an environment in 3D space. This allowed tracking of human bodies which could then be converted into input data that could be used in video games. The system was also used by various retailers to allow customers to try out clothes before purchasing them.
Even though the production of the Kinect will now stop, the latest version of the Kinect sensor is rumored to still be used in Microsoft's HoloLens system. How the sensor is used is still unknown.
The peripheral was mostly known for powering gameplay mechanics of various underwhelming casual games. Support for the sensor was rarely featured in major video games released at the time.
