The upcoming reboot of the DOOM franchise got slammed with negative reviews this friday as the open beta for the multiplayer component of the game launched. With six different game modes, DOOM looks to bring back the frantic arena based multiplayer of yesteryear with the current generation shine. The multiplayer component of the game is being developed in conjunction with Certain Affinity, a developer better known for its involvement in the development of Call of Duty: World at War.

While the developer is seeking to bring back the clasic arena style shooter with DOOM multiplayer it has instead delivered a multiplayer experience similar to that of Battlefield 4, Modern Warfare 3 and Halo, borrowing elements from those games and blending them together with a DOOM finish -- that is aesthetics, and sound design. Playing multiplayer heavily revolves around leveling up your character, unlocking customization features and so called "hacks", a reference to the "perks" system in recent Call of Duty games, that give you enhanced capabilities such as wallhacks and power armor.

Fans of the series were however not satisfied with the way the multiplayer component works, slamming the open beta with thousands of negative reviews on Steam claiming the game does no justice to the DOOM franchise and referencing the many Call of Duty-style gameplay elements as their biggest gripe. With just mere days until the full game is released on Friday May 13th, the future of DOOM is looking grim with fans still holding out hope for the singleplayer campaign of the game.

The open beta of the multiplayer component is running from Friday April 15th till Monday April 18th.
