Intel may be showing an extension for the HTC Vive, the virtual reality headset from Valve, that is capable of sensing depth at the company's Developer Forum conference later this month.

According to one of the company's employees, Dimitri Diakopoulos, Intel will name its HTC Vive extension RealSense. The extension uses a series of camera's to sense the depth of surrounding objects.

The employee posted several images of the extension on Twitter but they were removed earlier today. The extension is expected to be able to track hand movement as well as IR-tracked controllers.

The system may also be able to scan the environment in real-time to detect obstacles, though Intel has yet to comment on the device's usecases and features.

Intel Developer Conference is taking place in San Francisco from August 16th to August 18th.
