Nintendo's popular Game Boy Camera accessory launched 20 years ago in North America and Europe this week. The accessory received popularity because several games featured support for it.

For the respective markets, the Game Boy Camera accessory launched in June 1998 and allowed gamers to take black and white photos and selfies. These photos could be used in games or could be printed with the Game Boy Printer accessory, which also released in 1998.

The Game Boy Printer accessory was also popular because it allowed gamers to easily make labels or stickers. The printer printed on sticky tape in various colors that could be applied to surfaces.

The camera accessory featured a 128 by 128 pixel CMOS sensor that captured black and white images. The 4-color palette of the Game Boy allowed users to assign a specific color.

Both accessories were already available in Japan because they released several months earlier, but it wasn't until its international release that it became a hit.
