The popular 2D MOBA game Awesomenauts is now available free of charge. The switch to the free-to-play genre was announced last month.

According to the indie development studio behind the game, Ronimo Games, the switch to the free-to-play genre will "greatly improve" its matchmaking and networking experience.

The switch to free-to-play was announced last month when Ronimo Games announced the content's of the game's 4.0 update on the game's Steam community page.

With the new update, existing players have been rewarded the "Founder" status automatically. The status grants players access to an exclusive portait and medal.

Those who already own the base game and both expansion packs have been automatically upgraded to the game's "All Nauts Pack", which will grant players access to all current and upcoming characters forever.

The 4.0 update also includes various other changes, such as the introduction of profile levels, with which players can earn experience for both their profile and the character played. Both of the statistics can go up in level separately, granting players additional rewards.

On top of profile experience levels, players will also start earning Awesomepoints, which can be spent on unlocking any of the remaining characters. Every Awesomenaut can be unlocked this way, even if they were previously part of an expansion.

The update also features a new co-op versus bots game mode, a new armory menu, new game tutorials and several other minor changes.
