The server outage not only took down the Steam client that players use to launch games, it also took down the service's online website and online store, preventing players from purchasing items during Steam's Winter Sale.

While Steam has seen more server outages this year, this server outages seems to take longer than usual. Previous server outages have only lasted a short while.

Valve has not yet commented on the reason for the server outage, but an insider source did confirm that it the company is currently working on resolving the issues.

It is unknown when the company expects services to be available again.

Update: Steam services should be coming back online momentarily. (18:40 GMT)
