The Scottish newspaper The Scotsman reports this week that Rockstar Games' upcoming open-world title Grand Theft Auto V was made on a marketing and development budget of roughly $265 million. This reportedly makes the title the most expensive video game production in history.

In comparison with Hollywood films, it is second only to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, the current record-holder for the most expensive film production, which had a $300 million budget.

The title has been in development for over five years. Rockstar Games aims for the biggest entertainment launch in history next Tuesday, September 17th, in order to achieve that goal the company has started a huge marketing campaign with advertisements for the game popping up all around the globe .With almost 3 million pre-orders already in just the US, analysts are expecting it to be one of the most-sold games of this console generation.

New artwork pieces, that seemingly also feature as advertisements, have been recently spotted as well featuring some of the games key characters including Amanda, Tracey, Simeon, Wade and Tao. Grand Theft Auto V launches worldwide next Tuesday, September 17 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
