Star Wars: Battlefront 2 design director Dennis Brannvall has confirmed via Twitter that EA Games' second Battlefront game will feature dedicated servers.

Just like EA Games' first Star Wars: Battlefront game the second game will feature the exact same dedicated server functionality to power its multiplayer experience. Whether players will actually be able to select from a list of servers via an in-game server browser is still unknown.

The PC versions of recent Battlefield games, except for Battlefield 1, did not include an in-game server browser to join multiplayer servers. Instead, players were forced to install a browser plug-in to be able to browse multiplayer servers via their browser.

With the release of Battlefield 1 EA Games ditched the browser plug-in in favor of an in-game server browser that is very similar to the ones featured in other popular PC multiplayer games.

If the game will feature a server browser, players will be able to connect to their favorite community server instead of being forced to use the game's inferior matchmaking capabilities.

Even if the game will feature a server browser, players still won't be able to host their own dedicated server as they will only be able to rent dedicated servers from the official first party or third party vendors.

By renting a multiplayer server players can create private and public gaming sessions. The rented multiplayer servers can be tweaked by changing game options and map rotations.

Battlefield 2142 was EA Games' last multiplayer game that allowed players to host their own dedicated servers. Since Battlefield Bad Company 2 the game developer forces players to rent multiplayer servers.

The company stopped supporting hostable dedicated servers because it wants to generate more revenue by forcing players to rent them from official parties. According to the game developer, not allowing players to host dedicated servers ensures that the game will feature "a lag free multiplayer experience".
