EA Dice has announced it will be changing the way it is updating its shooter game Battlefield 1. The game developer will be shifting away from the current seasonal updates model in favor of monthly updates.

According to the press release, the seasonal update model for the game did not allow the game developer to act on the feedback of the community that it acquires through the game's Community Test Environment.

With the new monthly update model the developer wants to give players new content and updates at a faster pace by implementing the best ideas that come from the game's test environment.

The last seasonal update that will be released this spring will contain several small features, including the addition of a Platoon feature that allows friends to team up with each other to more easily complete objectives.

The May update for the game is said to include tweaks to Operations, resolving gameplay and balance issues and the introduction of a new feature to the game's server renting program.

By renting a multiplayer server players can create private and public gaming sessions. The rented multiplayer servers can be tweaked by changing game options and map rotations.

Battlefield 2142 was the last Battlefield game that allowed gamers to host their own servers. Since Battlefield Bad Company 2 the game developer forces players to rent multiplayer servers.

Why EA Dice stopped supporting hostable dedicated servers is likely related to wanting to generate more revenue. Many other popular shooter games such as Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Team Fortress 2 still allow gamers to host their own server.
