Blizzard Entertainment has started banning thousands of cheaters in Overwatch, the developer confirmed earlier today. The game released last week on May 24th for PC.
In the announcement the developer revealed that it has banned over 2000 people, permanently removing the cheaters from the game.
In a surpising turn of events the developer has also released the account names of 1500 Chinese cheaters on the developer's Chinese forum. First reports indicate that the game's anti-cheat functionality is doing its job of keeping the game's multiplayer community free of people that try to get ahead through the use of unconventional methods.
The game's anti-cheat system appears to not only flag current accounts. First reports indicate that the game is also able to find cheaters that re-purchase the game to regain access, only to be banned again instantly. This could indicate that the system keeps track of a special fingerprint of the cheater's machine to be able to track them.
