Ellie will be the only playable character in The Last of Us Part 2, development studio Naughty Dog stated earlier this week in an interview with the website IGN. The game is expected to release later this year.

The playable characters in the game were never confirmed. Trailers and screenshots of the game already suggested that Ellie would be the only playable character because Joel was rarely featured in those.

Whether the statement made in the interview is correct remains to be seen. Before the release of the first game the development studio stated that Joel would be the only playable character. However, close to its 2013 release it became apparent that both characters would be playable.

The story of The Last of Us Part 2 will take place five years after the events of The Last of Us. Players will play as Ellie as she take down hordes of Infected.

The Last of Us Part 2 is expected to release later this year exclusively for PlayStation 4.
