Microsoft head of Xbox Phil Spencer has announced that the company will be officially revealing the next generation of the Xbox One console, codenamed Project Scorpio, at E3 2017.

According to a recent press release, the new generation of the Xbox One console will be the "first true 4K console" and will emphasise on game compatibility to support older Xbox One games.

Project Scorpio seems to be Microsoft's answer to Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro, which brought 4K resolution support for titles that weren't too demanding for the console's hardware months before Microsoft will.

Whether the new generation of the Xbox One will feature 4K resolution support for all of the current Xbox One titles is unknown, but Project Scorpio's hardware specification indicate that the new console features hardware that is only marginally better than the PlayStation 4 Pro, so it seems unlikely to be the case.

The announcement further states that the company is "proud of the diverse lineup of games coming this year that will only be playable on Xbox One and will play better on Project Scorpio," and that it has "made it easy for recently released titles to upgrade to true 4K."

Just like every year, E3 will be taking place in Los Angeles, California, USA. The three-day industry event will start on June 13th 2017 and will run until June 15th 2017.
