The team behind the remastered version of the original System Shock game, Night Dive Studios, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the game's development.
The original game was released back in 1994 and was set aboard a space station in a cyberpunk vision of the year 2072. Assuming the role of a nameless hacker, the player attempts to hinder the plans of a malevolent artificial intelligence called SHODAN.
With the remake the developers of the game hope to stay true to the original title while also bringing new features and engine improvements. "We wanted the art of System Shock to be fresh and new while still remaining true to the aesthetics of the 1994 classic." the team explains.
"We've maintained much of the original look, while accentuating it beautifully by an array of modern rendering features such as Physically Based Rendering (PBR), screen-space reflections, real-time global illumination, ambient occlusion (HBAO), volumetric particles, and dynamic lighting. It's the world you remember."
To show potential backers how far the game has progressed the team has released a demo, which is available for free through Steam and GOG. According to the developers the demo represents the look and feel that they wish to deliver to the project's backers when the final version releases.
With the Kickstarter campaign the developers hope to raise atleast $900.000 to be able to finish development. As of writing backers have pledged $388,728 with 29 days left to go.
