Microsoft reveals Xbox Series X next generation console

Microsoft has revealed its next generation gaming console Xbox Series X. The console was announced with a trailer earlier this week.

The Xbox Series X will be the successor to the current Xbox One gaming console. However, the console does not seem to differ significantly from its predecessor apart from several hardware improvements.

The console will feature a tower design similar to that of a modern PC. It features exhaust fans at the top for cooling and a vertical disc drive slot for optical discs. The design is a departure from the flat console design that both Microsoft and Sony have embraced over the past two decades.

The Xbox Series X will feature a custom AMD Zen 2 soc, a custom AMD Navi GPU and a SSD drive. This will allow the console to render 4K resolution rendering up to 120 frames per second for select titles. 8K resolution rendering will also be available for a limited number of titles. All hardware featured in the console is already available on the PC market today. The console will also support various features found in current PC GPU drivers, such as variable rate shading, low latency mode and dynamic latency input.

The controller shown during the announcement is very similar to existing Xbox controllers currently on the market and features minor differences in shape and button layout. A share button will be available similarly to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 controllers. The controller will be compatible with Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs and will be included in the box.

The console is said to provide full backward compatibility with existing Xbox games. The announcement notes that the Xbox Series X will support "thousands of games from three generations and more forward," although the company did not provide further details of how this process will work.

Senua's Sage: Hellblade II by development studio Ninja Theory was the only game announced for the console. The studio joined the Xbox Game Studios family last year.

The Xbox Series X is scheduled to release in the fall of 2020. A retail price was not announced yet.
