According to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House the announcement of the PlayStation 4 Pro is Sony's answer to gamers who are migrating to the PC to get the best possible gaming experience.
House made the statement in the British newspaper The Guardian. According to House there is a dip in popularity of a console in the middle of its lifecycle because players are transfering to the PC for the best graphical experience.
The CEO notes that Sony does not consider Xbox One to be the main competition, but rather the PC because of its vast graphical capabilities.
"[The data] suggested that there’s a dip mid-console lifecycle where the players who want the very best graphical experience will start to migrate to PC, because that’s obviously where it’s to be had." House said.
"We wanted to keep those people within our eco-system by giving them the very best and very highest [performance quality]. So the net result of those thoughts was PlayStation 4 Pro – and, by and large, a graphical approach to game improvement." House added.
Whether the PlayStation 4 Pro hardware specifications are decent enough to be on par with high-end PC specifications remains to be seen.
After the announcement of the console several game development studios have toned down Sony's 4K gaming claims, noting that some games will be running in upscaled resolutions or are bound to 30 frames per second.
