Arenanet has announced that it will launch a new update for the Guild Wars 2 game mode World versus World this September. The Skirmishes update is supposed to change the way players score points for their server.
When the new Skirmishes scoring system activates on Friday the week long server matchups will be divided in 2-hour segments. In these segments players are able to earn War Score normally as they always have, but War Score is now being used to determine the winner of each skirmish.
When each 2-hour skirmish ends, War Score is reset, but the actual map state and status of towers, camps and keeps remain unchanged.
The new system is supposed to keep the score of the winning and losing servers closer together to create more exciting matchups. The changes will also have affect on the infamous nightcap strategy.
With nightcapping players were able to accumulate enough War Score for their server to win the matchup by playing at night when players from opponent servers were asleep. With the new system this will have less of an effect on the outcome of a matchup.
The new Skirmishes system is the first attempt in over 3 years to change the way War Score is awarded.
ArenaNet is expected to make further changes to the system in the coming months, including giving upgraded objectives more War Score based on their upgrade level.
