With the launch of the new Battlelog interface that rolled out as part of a Battlelog update last week Battlefield 1 is the first Battlefield game to feature an in-game server browser since the release of Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
The new in-game server browser featured in Battlefield 1 has been a much-needed improvement for the Battlefield franchise for years.
The last Battlefield game to feature an in-game server browser was Battlefield: Bad Company 2 which released over 6 years ago in 2010.
Previous Battlefield games, including Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4 and the flopped Battlefield Hardline, all failed to incorporate a decent server browser.
Players who played the games on PC were forced to install a browser plug-in to be able to browse multiplayer servers via their browser. For this reason Battlelog has long been criticized for making the multiplayer component of Battlefield games tedious and frustrating.
With the open beta of Battlefield 1 launching today we get a first look at the new in-game server browser featured in the game. Surprisingly, the new server browser is similar to what players would expect from any decent PC multiplayer shooter.
The Battlefield 1 server browser gives a full list of multiplayer servers available. With sorting and filtering options on the right side of the screen players are able to find the right server to join within seconds.
The layout, not the design, of the new server browser is actually strikingly similar to the server browser featured in Battlefield 1942, in the classic Battlefield title players could also manipulate the server browser by setting filters on the right side of the screen and by clicking the sorting tabs at the top of the server list.
The new server browser makes joining games surprisingly easy and removes the big barrier that prevented Battlefield multiplayer sessions from being easily accessible in previous Battlefield titles.
The new server browser is also available for the console versions of Battlefield 4. The new user interface is expected make its way to the PC version of Battlefield 4 later this year.
