The indie game That Dragon, Cancer has received the Games for Impact award at The Game Awards 2016 earlier today. The award was accepted by Ryan Green from Numinous Games.
That Dragon, Cancer is based on the Greens' experience of raising their son Joel, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer at twelve months old. Greens' son continued to survive for four more years before eventually succumbing to the cancer in March 2014.
In his acceptance speech Green thanked the people who supported his team during the development of the game, including over 3.000 Kickstarter backers. "That Dragon, Cancer exists because [everyone] believed it should exist," Green said.
The game initially was developed to relate Ryan personal experience with Joel when they were uncertain of his health, but following his death, they reworked much of the game to memorialize and personalize their time and interactions with Joel for the player.
Alongside the game came a short documentary titled Thank You for Playing. The documentary docuemnts both the last few years of Joel's life and the development of the game.
That Dragon, Cancer is available for PC, OS X, iOS and Ouya.
