Researchers of Intel and the university of the German city Darmstadt have released a video that showcases how Grand Theft Auto V can be used to train the software that powers self-driving vehicles.

In the video the researchers discuss various algorithms to analyse thousands of images to make the software that is used in self-driving vehicles more accurate. The system is able to distinguish roads, objects, people, buildings and vehicles.

By using Grand Theft Auto V the researchers were able to quickly gather thousands of images that are required for machine learning. With machine learning incredibly large datasets are required to make precise predictions.

Because the game is so realistic the images captured in the game can be used to tweak the algorithms. However, this does not mean that researchers will stop using real photos to further increase accuracy of the software.
