John Romero and Adrian Carmac have revealed a new first-person shooter game called Blackroom via Kickstarter. Earlier today the duo has published a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the game. Romero and Carmac were co-creators of the original DOOM games when they were still working at id Software. In the Kickstarter video Romero explain that the game is to be a visceral, varied and violent shooter that harkens back to classic FPS play with a mixture of exploration, speed, and intense, weaponized combat.
Blackroom has players battling it out with fast, skillful movement to dodge enemy attacks, circle-strafe their foes, and rule the air with rocket jumping in single- and multiplayer modes. The game is said to launch with unique multiplayer maps and robust modding support for the gaming community to make diabolical creations of their own design.
"We are excited to return to our roots and the roots of first-person shooters by moving forward and innovating the genre. I believe there is more to explore in FPS design. We understand first-person shooters as few do. We've put together a great development team to help us create this game. Adrian and I are incredibly excited to work together again to bring the world another FPS, like only we can create." says Romero in the Kickstarter video.
At id Software John Romero was mostly responsible for games such as Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth, Quake, Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3D. He served as executive producer and game designer on Heretic and Hexen. He designed most of the first episode of Doom, most of the levels in Quake and Wolfenstein: 3D: Spear of Destiny and wrote many development tools such as the DOOM level editor better known as DoomEd.
Adrian Carmack was forced out of id Software in September of 2005 when he, as co-founder of the company, decided to decline a $105 million takeover bid from Activision while two other partners were seeking to accept the bid. Carmack sued id Software not long after, the outcome of the lawsuit was never publicly revealed.
Blackroom is expected to release winter 2018 for PC.
